When Mac Tichenor’s son Willie died of osteosarcoma at the age of 19 back in 2006, oncologists still relied on a decades-old chemo regimen called MAP — high-dose methotrexate, combined with doxorubicin and cisplatin. Typically, for young patients with the rare bone cancer, it staved off death for a while.
